I hate to be the type of person who keeps going on about their holiday. From how wonderful it was to get away, to all the amazing food we ate, to all the things we did. On and on. Never shutting up about the elephants we saw, or the temples we went to. Reminding you 6 months from now that we went to Thailand and Singapore, and saying stuff like “Oh they do this differently overseas, which you would know if you ever went. By the way, did I tell you about our trip?” It gets tiresome. You get over it. I don’t move on. And I spend my life trying to recapture the freedom and joy experienced while overseas. On holiday. In Thailand.
Rather, this thought stems from seeing about 200+ temples in a day. Thats a joke. But it really happened! While Templing (as it came to be known) a thought was occurring to Simone, my mom and I – when is it big enough? When are there enough Buddha statues? When is it gold enough?
This picture is just one example and its a pretty toned down one too. With just a quick glance, you can see 8 Buddha statues, but if you look closer there are even more. And thats not even counting the ones behind the big one. In some of the bigger temples, I counted well over 30. All set up for public display.
So when is it enough? Something I was asking myself quite a bit with each new temple. And being a Christian, its something I can’t really understand. For me, my God is too big to contained, and no matter what I do, it is never enough. That is what makes the story of salvation so amazing. And what makes it a stark contrast to a religion where to be the best, you have to have the most golden, the biggest, or the most.
I don’t have an answer on when is enough. From what I saw, it never is, and never will be. You just keep adding statues in the vain hope that one day you’ll reach that magical number. And then it will be enough.

Maybe it’s like their version of collecting stamps? Or Star Wars figurines from Kinder Surprises.

That’s a very unconventional thing to collect. But I suppose different strokes for different folks!

My face looks like I am really sick of all the buddhas 😛
Great post and reflects my exact feelings after visiting so many temples. I think the main thing is “how big is your god?”, and if he’s quantifiable, ‘enough is enough’ when you get too tired to make more buddha idols.

Or when you run out of space…
