If we were to wait for all the problems on Earth to be fixed, before we headed for the stars, the human species is doomed. We may as well pack it all in now.
As long as there are people, there will be poverty, there will be fighting. Its not pessimistic, its realistic. And as long as there are people, there will be those people wanting and willing to help in any way they can. They will build homes for the homeless, cook food for the starving and broker peace between brothers. And as long as there are people, there will always be an adventuring spirit. There will always be those that must know what lies over the next hill, over the next mountain, over the vast expanse of water. And as long as there are people, there will always be enough people to do it all.
Choosing space exploration is not admitting defeat in the face of the Earth’s problems. Rather, it is another way to give hope, to give meaning. Choosing to go to Mars, to explore, is in our very nature. Just as our ancestors walked out of Africa, now we must be bold enough to step off the Earth.
Goodbye Philae
